Significant layers of clear coat are not removed by using precisely milled abrasives. These abrasives preserve as much of the paint as possible to remove the defect. The paint will have little or no loss of gloss. Keep in mind that some scratches can only be removed by a professional. If scratches go through the clear coat, the surrounding clear coat must be removed around it. If you intend to repaint the vehicle, this is an impractical solution for at home detailers.
