The foam used in these applicators are for applying uniform, even coats. Gone are the days of getting product all over your hands and wheels as opposed to neatly applied product. No more getting product on unintended surfaces. For example, accidentally touching the paintwork. No more of that! The coarse grey foam is what you hold, and the black foam applies the product. The grey foam is closed cell, so it prevents tire shines from being absorbed into it. From experience, it's so frustrating not having an applicator like this. More focus on applying even, neat coats and not fighting with the applicator to avoid unintended product smears.
